Two Vivitek D8800 projectors with short throw lenses and soft edge-blending used for screening of ‘BORTH’ a film by acclaimed British filmmaker, Gideon Koppel.
Filmed in the small Welsh coastal town of the same name, B O R T H is a film installation by the acclaimed filmmaker Gideon Koppel. Funded by the Arts Council of Wales, the film continues many of the themes of Koppel’s feature film ‘sleep furiously’ which was a critically acclaimed British film which was nominated for the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival and won the 2010 Guardian First Feature Film Award. The film was shown in The Aberystwyth Arts Centre as a single screen version using two Vivitek D8800 projectors fitted with short throw zoom lenses.

B O R T H is a wonderful and maverick place, with something of the wild-west about it. Houses line a single road and railway track for about a mile, with few amenities other than the Acorn Fish Bar, several pubs and an Animalarium which is home to a lonely Ocelot and some Wallabies. The film is a is a fifty five minute single take – a tracking shot – filmed uncompressed ArriRaw and then cropped down to a 3:1 aspect ratio.
The most complex challenge was to find a way to project this image onto a screen of approximately twelve metres long and four metres high with a throw distance of ten metres, while maintaining maximum picture quality.
The additional problem was that the gallery space was white. Vivitek was able to supply two D8800 projectors complete special short throw lenses to ensure the film was able to be shown in the format originally envisioned by the director:
“The image quality from the Vivitek DD8800 projectors was really impressive,” commented Gideon Koppell.
“The projectors managed to achieve an extraordinary combination of luminance which overcame the obstacle of the white walled environment, and colours which reproduced the original material faithfully. It was great to be able to fit short throw lenses to the projectors and the ‘soft edge blending’ facility produced an almost seamless image – quite a feat when working with that scale of projection.”

The Vivitek D8800 is designed for large venue installations. The model features up to ten user defined lens positions which can be set and stored by the Lens Posting Memory (LPS) function. There are six interchangeable lens options are available for flexible positioning in for a varying screen size or projection distance requirements. This projector can be stacked up to 4 times. For additional easebin installation, this projector also enables image warping and geometric
corrections for installations projection on curved surfaces. The D8800 is network-ready for the integration and system administration via RJ45. The projector also features a built-in 12V trigger for external device controlling.
